What helps us help parents learn how to use slings – when those parents are feeling down, upset, challenged or unreceptive to what we are sharing?

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESI have been sitting with my whole family waiting for the Tour De France to go through the town (“BOOOORING!!” said the children after a long wait! And “Mum! See that woman with an SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES E-mei!!! Baby carrier!!! QUICK!!!” — spot the woman in the photo 😉 ), when I got the most amazing message.

I feel touched and warm and happy and want to share it with you (with the author’s permission) :).

A Babywearing Consultant (Trageschule Advanced Course) posted this “Who recognizes this one. Love you Olga” (shared with her permission) alongside the below quote … “Teachers who reflect on how they feel and why they feel the way they do are in a better position to understand their interactions with others.” Tamar Jacobson “Don’t Get so Upset…” … , and quite a few other Trageschule Graduates liked it 🙂 (thank you all! You’ve so made my day!).

If you have not heard of Tamar Jacobson, check her out. She is an Oustanding Teacher Educator Award Winner. I feel so inspired reading about her and her writings. Both the quote above and the one which follows capture so perfectly what the Trageschule approach is about.

“I want to give them different options for approaching situations, as well as a more compassionate way of viewing the world, both inside and outside of the classroom. I truly care about them and their lives.” Tamar Jacobson

Yes, Trageschule training is about learning carrying methods and techniques and research for helping parents and caregivers with learning how to use a sling. And this training is also about getting skills for supporting a parent wherever they are in their life. And having a certain measure of communication skills for non-judgmental and compassionate support is crucial for this. This is why it is a part of Trageschule courses. And this is also why several courses, each one building on what has gone before, are essential for developing this capacity and deepening the self-reflection that Tamar Jacobson is talking about.

I have witnessed over the last three years, hearing from many of our Graduates, how these skills empowered them to help parents (including those feeling low, unsure about their ability to sling, or desperate to get it working or experiencing other challenges) AND actually save time when helping parents learn how to use a sling! I have been totally privileged to see the HUGE growth that happens between an Advanced and Certification course now with three Certification courses over the last three years.

This is also why preparing to become a Trageschule Trainer takes two more learning programmes past the Certification Course. As it takes time to grow the ability to understand ourselves to be better able to help others learn and support the parents. And this ability, I believe, is CRUCIAL for helping course participants to develop skills for providing parents and babies with support and learning that is both effective and compassionate.

I am so GRATEFUL to have witnessed this, too. I am grateful to those of you who have chosen Trageschule for your babywearing education journey, for your trusting me with supporting your learning :). Thank you. And here is what two of our course participants had to say about why the communication skills component was a crucial part of their learning (shared with their permission – thank you!). Notice how this resonates with Tamar’s words, too :). Enjoy :)!

“I thoroughly enjoyed the course -and am so excited about starting up a local sling meet again. Thank you.

However, for me, this course turned out to be more than just the Trageschule foundation course — it was like a retreat! I feel energised; more grateful; more mindful of my thoughts, actions and reactions. It was an honour and pleasure to have met you and I felt quite overwhelmed with gratitude as we were leaving the hostel yesterday evening.

Many, many thanks again

And thank you for the inspiration.”

“Thank you so much for a wonderful weekend at the last babywearing course. It was such a pleasure to meet you. I really enjoyed the course and many moments have stayed with me. Quite apart from learning all about babywearing, there were many aspects of the communication & listening skills that have helped me enormously. I did mention at the closing of the course that there could be perhaps less role play in favour of practising our wrapping skills, but in fact it has been the role plays and subsequent discussions that have stayed with me most.”
